Bitcoin ATMs in Australia Reach 1,000

Australia, now the third-largest center for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency ATMs, has reached a new high with 1,000 operational machines exchanging cryptocurrencies and fiat currencies.

As of April 24, there are 1,002 Bitcoin ATMs in Australia, positioning it just behind the United States and Canada in terms of numbers.

Australia accounts for 2.7% of the worldwide Bitcoin ATM network.

Data from Coin ATM Radar shows that the U.S. installed its first 1,000 crypto ATMs by November 2017 and Canada achieved the same milestone in January 2021.

At present, the U.S. holds 82.8% of the world's Bitcoin ATMs, totaling 31,170, while Canada has 2,918, making up 7.8% of the global total.

The cumulative number of Bitcoin ATMs set up across Australia over time is documented by Coin ATM Radar. Previously, Australia saw little activity in the crypto ATM market.

Nonetheless, there has been a significant rise in uptake starting from late 2022, propelled by private sector engagement.

In April 2023, the number of Bitcoin ATMs in Australia exceeded those in Asia, which includes key markets like China, Japan, Singapore, and India.

Given the current pace of installations, Australia is on track to outpace Europe, which currently has 4.3% of the global active Bitcoin ATM market, equivalent to 1,617 machines.

Other nations with a notable presence of crypto ATMs include Spain with 261 machines, El Salvador with 215, Poland with 211, Germany with 194, and Hong Kong with 157.

Cointelegraph recently covered a story about hackers who had earlier exposed the Bitcoin ATM database in El Salvador and have now disclosed part of the source code for the country’s state-operated Chivo Bitcoin wallet.

“This time I bring you the code that is inside the Bitcoin Chivo Wallet ATMs in El Salvador, remember that it is a government wallet, and as you know, we do not sell, we publish everything for free for you,” stated the group known as CiberInteligenciaSV on a public forum.

On April 22, the local cybersecurity initiative VenariX alerted the public about the imminent leak on X, referencing CiberInteligenciaSV’s Telegram channel, which announced plans to release the source code.
