Artificial Intelligence Makes First Crypto Transaction

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong recently oversaw his first cryptocurrency transaction fully managed by artificial intelligence (AI) bots, marking a significant step following several industry initiatives to create platforms where AI agents can execute transactions.
“This week at @CoinbaseDev we witnessed our first AI to AI crypto transaction,” Armstrong shared in an Aug. 30 post on X.
Armstrong detailed that one AI agent—a bot designed for a specific task—used cryptocurrency tokens to interact with another AI agent and acquire AI tokens.
These AI tokens are essentially data strings that enable algorithms to learn from information.
“They used tokens to buy tokens,” Armstrong emphasized.
He further explained that a significant limitation for AI agents currently is their lack of transaction capabilities.
Without a payment method, AI agents struggle with basic tasks like booking plane tickets, reserving hotels, and managing social media tasks beyond content creation, such as promoting posts through paid ads.
“AI agents cannot get bank accounts, but they can get crypto wallets. They can now use USDC on Base to transact with humans, merchants, or other AIs. Those transactions are instant, global, and free,” Armstrong added.
This development follows Armstrong's recent call for large language models (LLMs)—the technology behind AI systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude—to have crypto wallets.
“Let’s help AI agents get work done (on your behalf) and participate in the economy,” Armstrong suggested.
This advancement aligns with the introduction of new platforms by various crypto firms aimed at enabling AI agents to execute transactions.
In August, blockchain development firm Skyfire launched a payment platform that allows AI agents to autonomously spend money.
